Biology and Habits
Earwigs are a gregarious insect and will form large groups in protected moist environments. Such areas include underneath leaf litter and mulch, behind bark, under stones, wood piles, or other areas that retain moisture. Females produce 30-50 eggs in the first batch and fewer in subsequent batches. She then tends to the nymphs in underground cells which were used for overwintering. Eggs and nymphs do not survive long in dry conditions. Earwigs feed on dead plants and insects, but will occasionally feed on vegetables, flowers, fruits, or other plants.
Control
Earwig control often requires eliminating outdoor moisture sources. Create a dry environment around the perimeter of the building by removing excess mulch, stones, debris, and firewood. If necessary, apply an appropriately labeled insecticide around the foundation. Baits may be applied to the exterior perimeter in potential earwig harborage. Interior treatments with an appropriately labeled insecticide may also be required.
