Biology and Habits
Field ant is a common name for a large and diverse group of species. Behavior and nest formation can vary, but the most common species causing problems will build large dirt mounds in grass or garden beds. Occasionally, nests are found alongside sidewalks or foundations. While nests may be unsightly, workers spend their time outdoors and will rarely enter homes or buildings
Control
Field ants are typically not a cause for concern as their activity is almost exclusively outdoors. If treatment is desired, locate the nest and inject an appropriately labeled insecticide directly into the dirt. Granular baits dug into the mounds are also effective. Scraping off the top layer prior to treatment may increase effectiveness. Occasionally, these ants are mistaken for carpenter ants, however their behavior and habitats are very different. Prior to treatment, it is essential to know the difference between species in order to effectively control the ants.
