Biology and Habits

There are many species of ground beetles, however the most commonly encountered are shiny black in color. These beetles are most active at night and feed primarily on other insects, including larvae. Ground beetles are attracted to light and sometimes enter homes and buildings under thresholds or through doors and windows. 

Control

Control for ground beetles is not usually necessary, but can be achieved by applying an appropriately labeled insecticide barrier around the perimeter. Repellent pesticides work best. Removal of rocks, logs, or other objects which provide daytime harborage near the house can discourage activity. Install sodium vapor and yellow bulbs to prevent light attraction.
