Biology and Habits
Concrete mites, also known as sidewalk mites, breed outdoors and produce at least 2 generations per year, with activity peaking in spring and summer. The active life stages of concrete mites are predators, feeding on small soft bodied arthropods and eggs or larvae. They may also feed on pollen. Concrete mites are commonly found quickly moving on concrete, bricks, or other masonry on hot sunny days. When crushed, they leave behind a bright red stain.
Control
Concrete mites are considered beneficial and do not cause damage or bite. Their presence is very short lived and control is not recommended. In instances where control is desired, an appropriately labeled pyrethroid insecticide spray may provide relief for several weeks.
