Biology and Habits

Several species of wood cockroaches are found in Illinois. Females produce about 30 egg capsules each containing between 32-36 eggs. Development time from egg to adult takes approximately 318 days on average. While males present with the classic cockroach appearance, females have much shorter wings, exposing their abdomen. Males are capable of flying and are attracted to lights. Although they may occasionally enter structures, wood cockroaches live outdoors under bark of dead trees, tree holes, wood piles, and sometimes cedar shingles and siding. These species do not breed or survive indoors.

Control

Since wood cockroaches do not often enter indoors, control is generally not required. If necessary, apply a barrier treatment with an appropriately labeled liquid insecticide. Pay special attention to cracks and crevices around doors, windows, or light fixtures. Caulking and installing mesh screens to eliminate entry points is good practice. Treat cedar shake roofs with an appropriately labeled insecticide or replace the shingles with a different material.
